FIFA to migrate its NFT collection to own EVM-compatible blockchain
FIFA has announced that its official digital collectibles platform, FIFA Collect, will migrate to a new Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible blockchain, aptly named the FIFA Blockchain. This transition is scheduled to begin no earlier than May 20, 2025, and aims to enhance performance, scalability, and future innovation for the platform.
Migration Timeline: The migration will commence no earlier than May 20, 2025. Users will be notified in advance with detailed instructions.
Wallet Compatibility: Post-migration, FIFA Collect will support EVM-compatible wallets such as MetaMask and those utilizing WalletConnect. Algorand-based wallets like Pera and Defly will no longer be supported.
User Action Required: Users who have exported their collectibles must reimport them before the migration date to ensure inclusion in the automatic transfer. After the cut-off date, manual migrations will require additional verification.
USDC Balances: Users can spend their USDC balances until the migration date. After the transition, USDC can be withdrawn but not spent on the platform.
Service Downtime: The platform will be unavailable for approximately 12 hours during the migration process.
FIFA's decision to transition to its own EVM-compatible blockchain stems from the desire to:
Support new experiences and features for users.
Enable broader wallet compatibility.
Provide a stronger foundation for future innovations in the digital collectibles space.
This move marks a significant shift from FIFA's previous partnerships with Algorand and Polygon, reflecting a strategic focus on enhancing user experience and platform capabilities.
