'The Walking Dead' Ethereum NFT Game Is About to Be Killed Off
Gala Games has officially announced the shutdown of The Walking Dead: Empires, its blockchain-based survival MMORPG, with the final playable date set for July 31, 2025. This decision comes after the game spent over a year in open beta following its initial announcement in late 2021.
The Walking Dead: Empires allowed players to immerse themselves in AMC's post-apocalyptic universe, where they could scavenge for supplies, build bases, and fend off both walkers and rival survivors. A distinctive feature of the game was its integration of Ethereum-based NFTs, enabling players to own indestructible in-game assets such as weapons, land deeds, and hero characters. These NFTs not only enhanced gameplay but also held real-world value, with some items fetching significant prices in the marketplace.
In light of the game's closure, Gala Games has committed to ensuring that the NFTs acquired by players retain their utility. To this end, the company will distribute new NFTs from its broader gaming ecosystem to existing The Walking Dead: Empires NFT holders. These replacement NFTs are intended to offer "equal functionality" within other Gala Games products, allowing players to continue enjoying benefits similar to those provided by their original assets.
While specific details regarding the distribution process and the exact nature of the replacement NFTs have yet to be disclosed, Gala Games has emphasized its dedication to supporting its community during this transition. Players are encouraged to stay updated through official Gala Games channels for forthcoming announcements and instructions related to the compensation plan.
